Fifteen years ago, my daughter, a communication major, wrote her final college paper on how American owned television stations in South America selected news to influence this population. Her professor was enlightened by her work but warned not to go further with this as she’d never get a job in her field.
As I flip through my Yahoo News I see how what she wrote 15 years ago has affected me. Everyday I receive unsolicited news based on algorithms of what I’ve purchased or previewed in my use of the web. It limits my view of the world.
Oddly, my eyes woke to this when I was attempting to get a time slot on one of the prime Disneyworld venues. Since I was unable to acquire the prime seat I selected a less popular venue. After this Yahoo News barraged me with articles on the glories of this less popular venue. Sorry Yahoo News but this brainwashing only added insult to injury.
In the past I have tried to shut off this phone news without success. I tire of royal updates and since I watched Meghan Markle’s wedding Yahoo gives me full updates on each time she sneezes. I would not want to be in her shoes.
If anyone knows how this can be blocked please let me know. These articles have gone too far and reminds me of what occurred in Hitler’s time. I wish I encouraged my daughter to proceed with her work as they are now coming for me.
It’s Kathleen and if you don’t like what I say it’s still Kathleen.
