Chrysler Art Museum: American and Modern

Let’s continue our tour with some Americana..

Washington Crossing the Delaware by George Caleb Bingham

His armies were victorious. This was the turning point of the Revolutionary War.
The Signing of the Declaration of Independence
another version Washington Crossing the Delaware
both by Edward Hicks

Miles Sherbrook by John Singleton Copley 1771. He was a prominent Boston businessman.

The 1800’s

The Hudson River School of Painting The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds by Thomas Cole. If ever visiting upstate New York check out the Thomas Cole home and Olana, the home of Frederick Church, another Hudson River School painter.

Winslow Homer – who could ever forget these scenes of American life?

The Shakers – a part of this time line in Americana.

Unaware of the Shakers? Research them, see the Ken Burns documentary. They were a fascinating group of people.

20th Century Americana

Mary Cassatt, The Family. Considered an American painter she was born in Pennsylvania and spent most of her life in France. She was part of the impressionism movement.

Frederick Childe Hassam – another noted American impressionist painter.

The Countess of Lathom by John Singer Sargent. Painting portraits were not his favorite but his creativity and artistic talent glows despite his dislike for the work.
More Americana by Leon Kroll, In The Hills. A painting done among the apple trees of the Catskill Mountains.

And a bit of the modern despite my disdain..

Tomorrow: Some French and Picasso works.
