Future Son-in-Law Arrival??

Today my daughter and her latest beau are arriving for a visit and I am nervous. Probably not as nervous as he is, but still so. They met while working at Sundance, thank you Robert Redford. It started slowly when the third person from their outing was unable to attend and the trio became a duo.

No, he isn’t a Mormon but that would be fine. She is 37, and any guy that is breathing, within reason, would be acceptable at this point as I want her to settle down. That mother of the bride dress in my closet is acquiring mildew as I write.

My daughter visited his Midwestern family home a few months ago. They are into memories and even have a Christmas room. Anyone who knows me realizes I toss anything over a week old.

The visit is 4 days. Will keep you posted.

Corona Humor? #2

There is much craziness regarding this virus, here’s a couple doses:

Check out this hunky Spanish soldier..

Then there are the new ideas and innovations folks come up with during this time.

A Squirrel Picnic Table

I’ve purchased one for $30. My daughter’s out of work friend came up with this idea.

Have to keep the economy going and we certainly want to keep our squirrels happy.

Keep thinking, America!

Everything Starts with a Conversation.

Hearing this from Gayle King on CBS This Morning reminds me of another quote:

“Everything starts with a meeting.”

As we free from quarantine are we considering these two questions? When we talk and meet are we kinder, gentler, and more tolerant of others? The suffering with the pandemic has been great, and if we learn from this suffering there will be growth from the pain.

Rocky Mountain National Park

The Rocky Mountain National Park is a summer and winter adventure with 415 square miles of beauty. It’s scope is vast and mountains high. There are greater than 300 miles of hiking trails, wildflowers, and starry nights.

There is everything available for the visitor from wilderness camping to cross country skiing. Begin your visit with the Plan Your Visit tab of the Park website:

https://www.nps.gov/romo/index.htm

An abundance of information is on the web site with blogs, multimedia presentations, and even a sound library. Check it out!

A Corona Mish Mash

One positive thing which has occurred from the Corona virus is the surge in animal adoptions. Some shelters have depleted their inventory.

Remember, dog spelled backwards is God. Is this a message?

Staying on the animal theme .. Two pandas finally mated after 10 years of zoo interference.

Guess they needed a moment of intimacy. Here’s the article.

Wow, that’s a long log on, but it works, give it a moment.

And now something hilarious.. another type of mask.

Keep the faith, wash your hands, remain distant from others, and stay away from sick folks. And, yes, don’t forget the mask.

Want to close with another dog pic.

Isn’t she adorable?

The Pandemic: 1918-1920

The 1919 Pandemic or Spanish Flu, lasted from January 1918 through December 1920. It was believed to be of avian origin with the location of origin unknown.

It was dubbed the Spanish Flu due to Spain’s neutrality in World War I. The Virus occurred during the World War I time frame.

The Flu infected 500 million people worldwide with a 10% estimated death toll of 50 million. 25% of the world’s population was infected with 99% dying under the age of 65. The virus ravaged the immune system of young adults.

A quick death occurred for most infected with the virus. Illness began in the a.m. with the individual sick by noon, and dead by nightfall. If death did not occur early bacterial complications such as pneumonia would cause death.

Transmission was spread through returning soldiers which lead to the virus’ explosion worldwide.

These Pandemics have an interesting numerical sequence:

1919-2020-2121????

Following is a poem written in 1869 and reprinted during the Pandemic by Kathleen O’Mara.

And the people stayed home.
And read books, and listened, and rested,
and exercised, and made art, and played games,
and learned new ways of being, and were still.
And listened more deeply.
Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows.
And the people began to think differently. And the people healed.
And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways,
the earth began to heal. And when the danger passed,
and the people joined together again,
they grieved their losses, and made new choices,
and dreamed new images,
and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully,
as they had been healed.

Something to think about. Thanks, Kathleen

Chancellor Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel began her life as daughter to a Lutheran minister father growing up in East Germany. In college she studied quantum chemistry obtaining a doctorate in this area. She left her job as a researcher when a new political group was forming. With her scientific training as background, she successfully used these skills to rise in this new formed party, The Christian Democratic Union of Germany.

By 2005 she was elected to Chancellor of Germany. Currently her skills and background as a scientist are assisting Germans as they handle the Corona Virus with the lowest number of cases and deaths in Europe.

During a visit with Vladimir Putin he brought his Labrador Retriever into the room knowing the Chancellor’s fear of dogs. Later she stated,

“I understand why he has to do this — to prove he’s a man. … He’s afraid of his own weakness.”

Washington DC: Pandemic Streets

I dedicate this blog to my daughter’s friend, and fellow Sundance worker who lost his life to the corona virus this week. He is one of the almost 70,000 Americans who have fallen to this horrific virus.*

He was in his early 30’s.

Sunday, April 26, 2020, 2 p.m.

And while not a fan, am glad to see we aren’t spending $24 million annually to protect this property like they are in New York City.

A Tree of Life

Continue to stay safe….

  • Wear a mask when out in public.
  • Socially isolate. Keep to small groups of 10 or less.
  • Always.. sneeze into your hand or elbow.
  • Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer.

The life you save may be your own.

Making PB & J the Kathleen Way or Quarantine Ennui..

For a little fun and a blog filler I am throwing in this blog. This would be good for the young’ens looking for something to do and learn. Have them make their own lunch.

Start with a toaster

Check to see you have all the ingredients

Put the bread in the toaster

And push the toaster lever

Once the toast is up add peanut butter and jelly

Apply the top layer of bread and cut in half, if desired.

And voila you have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

No, this is actually a ballerina from the American Ballet Company but couldn’t resist.* Can’t wait till New York City gets healed.

Hope you got a laugh from my Quarantine Ennui Blog.

*From a Met fundraiser email. The Met is closed through July with a $100 million shortfall. Give a donation ,if you can.

What is May Day and Why?

May Day welcomes the change of season. Beginning with the Romans who celebrated The Festival of Flora, the goddess of flowers, it was a late April through early May event.

Today it is essentially a European and Asian public holiday celebrated with dance, singing, sweets, and gifts. Here are some of the traditions associated with the holiday across the pond.

Dancing.. In Pagan days people commemorated this holiday by dancing around a May Pole. This symbolized the union of masculine and feminine.

Singing.. National songs and songs of solidarity are sung on this day. In the United States our May Day started as a workers movement on May 1, 1886, where 300,000 workers walked off their jobs to demand better working conditions. Many countries celebrate in this way and also have military parades.

However, May Day is mainly a time for singing traditional country songs celebrating country and the change of season.

Sweets.. It is a day for cakes and other sweets. Here’s an an idea from one of America’s favorite bakers, Sandra Lee.

Gifts.. May Baskets filled with candy, flowers, or small gifts are placed on neighbor’s front door as a surprise. What a nice gesture.

I like this holiday.

Don’t you?
