The TikTok War

Photo by Felix Mittermeier on Pexels.com

Since much reporting of the Russian build up is occurring on TikTok, this aggression has been named for the platform. In the last 24 hours deescalation has been seen with trains leaving areas which surround Ukraine, and hopefully this is over. President Biden spoke to the Russian people on their television last night saying he did not want to put sanctions against them. If Biden implemented his plan it would take the Russian economy at least 10 years to recover.

Wonder how this will turn out for Putin?

Perhaps this is the former KGB officers last stand.

One can only hope and pray.

Real Estate In Florida

The Stupell Home Decor Collection - 10 in. x 15 in. " Florida Teal Blue and Pink Illustrated Scenic Map Poster" by Vestiges Wall Plaque Art

The crazed real estate market in Florida persists with no end in site. Since I cannot live safely in St. Augustine, Florida, due to a peeping tom neighbor, as well as a threatening neighbor who has a drug history, guns, and domestic violence issues, am exploring other parts of the state to move to. Condo living is terrifying sharing a wall with these type of people, and condo boards say they can do nothing. Guess they can’t… remember Miami.. Police have justified fears responding to domestic violence calls, re-read my recent New York City blog.

In visiting the West Coast of Florida have been impressed. Their housing market driven by Northerners with cash offering as much as $75-100,000. over price is daunting. Building a house in this area can take as long as 2 years as counties limit building permits fearful builders will be unable to contractually oblige purchasers with purchasers loosing their money. This is justified as often these folks only appear when they need weed money, (the St. Augustine mantra). Let’s hope the West Coast is different…

Woman looking at damage after a water pipe leak at home

In 24 hours the 3 homes the realtor and I were scheduled to view dropped to 1. One home had 25 offers, and while on the road to the second home a realtor called to say the owner had accepted an offer. Visiting the available home a decaying, mold infested residence was found with a listing price of $249,000. Rather than a buyer it needed a match, however, someone may purchase it only to do that for the lot.

What a conundrum I find myself in.

Anyone have anything they wish to sell?

Erin Jackson: Olympic Gold

Photo by Thomas Laukat on Pexels.com

This gal,* at 29, won the 500 meter speed skating competition with a 37.04 time. She is the first Black woman to win an individual medal in this event. Her Sunday win comes with accolades, however, the story behind her win is equally astounding. Teammate Brittany Bowe gave Erin her position on the event as she felt Erin had a better chance of medaling, and she certainly did!

Met Opera House at Lincoln Center: Tosca and Le Nozze di Figaro

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tos.jpg

Tosca Curtain

Tosca is a political story set in Rome during the 1800’s Napoleonic Wars. It is tragic with passionate music and pageantry. The main characters are entwined in a love triangle with dire consequences. While beautifully executed it was a disturbing plot.

Le Nozze di Figaro is a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart opera. It is a romantic romp with a nobleman intrigued and chasing his wife’s maid, who is soon to be married. The plot has many twists and turns and is much fun. It was a delight to see this after the dark Tosca.

Final Bows

Both operas were exquisite. While not versed in Italian, monitors interpret the verse. If interested in attending purchase tickets at the Met Box Office. Tickets are reasonable and available, starting at $25 for the Family Circle, which is the opera house upper levels. These levels provide an amazing bird’s eye view of the performance and one can spread out as this section is sparsely populated.

Give opera a try, you never know.

The Music Man at the Winter Garden

The Music Man revival at the Winter Garden with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster was magnificent. While still in previews it is a perfect performance. Unsure how Hugh did such a rigorous performance as the week before he was recovering from covid. Post performance Hugh Jackman ran past bystanders to a waiting black SUV which whisked him away to hopefully a hot bath.

Stage Door for a glimpse of Hugh

Sutton Foster was equally amazing with her phenomenal voice and dance steps. A two time Tony winner, believe the third is in the wings for her this year. Should you be in New York City stop by for a thoroughly entertaining evening provided by a stellar cast. What a great revival!

Opening Act – a sneak peek of the fun to come.

Can’t wait!

February is Black History Month

Photo by RODNAE Productions on Pexels.com

The idea for honoring African Americans and their contributions to America first came with Carter G. Woodson, in 1926. Considered the “father of black history,” he envisioned a week long celebration focusing attention on notable black Americans.

His idea grew, and by 1969 Kent State University students and educators promoted his idea with February chosen as Black History Month, due to the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, (2/12), and Frederick Douglass, (2/14). In 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized the month during our bicentennial year 50 years after celebrations had begun.

The Month is honored in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

NFL: A Disgrace

Photo by football wife on Pexels.com

Don’t know much about football, and unable to even name a team, but, know one thing, it is an industry with a lack of coaching diversity. With 70% of players black, only 1 in 9 coaches are.

Why? Most owners are wealthy white men.

The Brian Flores lawsuit which calls attention to this situation will be one which is interesting to watch in this billion dollar industry. I am cheering for a verdict in Flores favor.

To me it is a slam dunk, is this football?? It would seem to me that black players would better respond and work with black coaches thus causing player contentment, team functioning, thus wins!

What a thought..

Working As An American

Photo by Ramil Ugot on Pexels.com

I love New York City and the main reason is the diversity. While those who reside here may never consider America “their home,” or “their country,” I understand. This is not to say that it doesn’t bother me at times, but, I try to walk in their shoes as the Indian proverb states, and it brings me back to reality.

Currently I am working in a hospital with Russian nurses. With the sleepless nights I experience thinking of the imminent war with Russia I wonder how this will play out. Of course, they have one advantage as they speak their native tongue. I will have no idea what they are saying and perhaps that is for the best.

Belfast

undefined

Any of the 10 folks who follow my blog know I am a computer dunderhead.* Last night this prevailed while attempting to access the new season of Billionaire. While asking Sori, or is it Suri, ended up at Belfast, then found myself purchasing the movie in error for $19.99, an exorbitant cost. However, if you have a family of 10, it’s a deal, and it can be accessed for 48 hours. Will have to reimburse my daughter when I pay the Brooklyn rent.

The movie is profound, and recounts the time of Irish history known as “the troubles.” Portrayed through the eyes of a young boy, it conveys the reality of a Protestant family living among Catholics. Attempts are made, and succeed, to bring the child into a gang. Scenes of violence are accurate, and moving. Cast performance is impeccable. Recommend using subtitles when viewing as dialect is strong. Filmed in black and white adds to the story line. If you see any film this year, see this.

And as to Billionaire, never was able to access. Need update, can anyone help?

Dear William: A Father’s Memoir to Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss

This book by author David Magee is a brutal unpeeling of layers of pain. Mr. Magee is an American author, screenwriter, and producer. The memoir addresses generational issues growing up in light of past sins – divorce, infidelity, drug addiction.

His golden child William died of an accidental overdose.

No easy answers here, but provides hope, and definitely worth a read.

I often think what young folks raised during this time are feeling, and how this will affect their futures.

Do you?
