February is Black History Month

The idea for honoring African Americans and their contributions to America first came with Carter G. Woodson, in 1926. Considered the “father of black history,” he envisioned a week long celebration focusing attention on notable black Americans.

His idea grew, and by 1969 Kent State University students and educators promoted his idea with February chosen as Black History Month, due to the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, (2/12), and Frederick Douglass, (2/14). In 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized the month during our bicentennial year 50 years after celebrations had begun.

The Month is honored in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

NFL: A Disgrace

Photo by football wife on Pexels.com

Don’t know much about football, and unable to even name a team, but, know one thing, it is an industry with a lack of coaching diversity. With 70% of players black, only 1 in 9 coaches are.

Why? Most owners are wealthy white men.

The Brian Flores lawsuit which calls attention to this situation will be one which is interesting to watch in this billion dollar industry. I am cheering for a verdict in Flores favor.

To me it is a slam dunk, is this football?? It would seem to me that black players would better respond and work with black coaches thus causing player contentment, team functioning, thus wins!

What a thought..

Working As An American

I love New York City and the main reason is the diversity. While those who reside here may never consider America “their home,” or “their country,” I understand. This is not to say that it doesn’t bother me at times, but, I try to walk in their shoes as the Indian proverb states, and it brings me back to reality.

Currently I am working in a hospital with Russian nurses. With the sleepless nights I experience thinking of the imminent war with Russia I wonder how this will play out. Of course, they have one advantage as they speak their native tongue. I will have no idea what they are saying and perhaps that is for the best.

Belfast

undefined

Any of the 10 folks who follow my blog know I am a computer dunderhead.* Last night this prevailed while attempting to access the new season of Billionaire. While asking Sori, or is it Suri, ended up at Belfast, then found myself purchasing the movie in error for $19.99, an exorbitant cost. However, if you have a family of 10, it’s a deal, and it can be accessed for 48 hours. Will have to reimburse my daughter when I pay the Brooklyn rent.

The movie is profound, and recounts the time of Irish history known as “the troubles.” Portrayed through the eyes of a young boy, it conveys the reality of a Protestant family living among Catholics. Attempts are made, and succeed, to bring the child into a gang. Scenes of violence are accurate, and moving. Cast performance is impeccable. Recommend using subtitles when viewing as dialect is strong. Filmed in black and white adds to the story line. If you see any film this year, see this.

And as to Billionaire, never was able to access. Need update, can anyone help?

Dear William: A Father’s Memoir to Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss

This book by author David Magee is a brutal unpeeling of layers of pain. Mr. Magee is an American author, screenwriter, and producer. The memoir addresses generational issues growing up in light of past sins – divorce, infidelity, drug addiction.

His golden child William died of an accidental overdose.

No easy answers here, but provides hope, and definitely worth a read.

I often think what young folks raised during this time are feeling, and how this will affect their futures.

Do you?

NYC Plays Tips

Been taking in much NYC culture during this time. Here’s some pointers:

  • Get your ticket from the box office. It’s the cheapest route to get tickets.
  • Once in line, have your vaccination card and photo id ready for inspection. It will expedite entry.
  • Dress warm as theaters are cold. Layers.
  • Arrive a half hour before the performance.
  • Leave before the curtain falls, or stay seated till the bulk of the patrons have left. I’ve taken a number of falls, and patrons don’t always watch their kids who can knock down seniors.
  • Hold on to the hand rails at all times.
  • Go to the bathroom before the performance, or immediately after. Intermission is a nightmare.
  • Bring 2 masks. Stay apart as much as possible.
  • Millennials do not converse, don’t waste your breath in trying.
  • If seated near someone from across the pond, be friendly. They love to gab and learn of the US, and NYC sites.
  • Before you leave check out the area around your seat to ensure you have all your belongings.

Never Underestimate American Ingenuity

Came across an interesting article which I wish to share.

https://www.wired.com/story/north-korea-hacker-internet-outage/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Essentially, an American was hacked by North Koreans, (actually Chinese), and fought back taking down their internet.

Hats off to P4X.

As a nurse people share their secrets with me be it on a plane, or in a short street conversation. Ran into a man who during the Obama years said no one will ever know how close we were to a war with North Korea. He was on the negotiating team. Glad to see efforts are continuing to keep them in check if only through back door channels.

Stay warm everyone.

NYC Subway and Train Etiquette

Been awhile since my NYC subway and train travel. Had to update my skills with the Pandemic still looming. Here’s some things to consider should you visit during this time.

  • Download the AP MY MTA. It’s amazing.
  • Wear black.
  • Buy Canada Goose outerwear, it’s the one with the red patch.
  • On the subway close your eyes, don’t talk.
  • Stay 6 feet apart.
  • Wear a mask at all times or a $100 ticket is waiting.
  • If you take the elevator to reach another level, face outward toward the wall.
  • Do not talk to children, or touch them.
  • Do not talk to dogs, or touch them.
  • Keep your Metro card loaded.
  • Should a pan handler come through the train keep eyes closed. Pretend you are asleep.
  • Do not converse or attempt to make conversation with other passengers.
  • If you are unsure if you are on the right train make that known as soon as you enter the car, passengers will yell out instructions or answers.
  • Do not eat on the train or bus.
  • Do not make conversation with others on the train or bus.
  • Paper maps are available at the train or bus information booth.
  • Enjoy the ride.

Police Officer Mora Laid to Rest…………………..Caveman Capitol Attacker

Was in the City today and picked up a copy of the free newspaper, AM Metro New York. A beautiful tribute to Officer Wilbert Mora appeared in the newspaper. Besides giving his life, this son of Dominican immigrants also donated his organs. Five individuals benefited from this donation.

What a valiant, courageous, young man, and such a tragic loss.

After reading of this Officer Mora, came across an article about this man. I hate to even place his name in the same blog as Officer Mora.

Aaron Mostofsky, was one of the insurrectionists. He is the son of an elected Supreme Court Judge whose term, according to Ballotpedia, ends January 1, 2034. Dressing as a caveman he stole a Capitol Police Officer’s shield, and bullet proof vest. There are pictures of him smashing Capitol building windows. He also pursued a Capitol Police Officer to the second floor. He faces $250,000., in fines, and 5 years in federal prison. Hopefully, he will get the max on both sentences, and at 35 he is sunk, but have no sympathy..

Newt Gingrich stated the members of the House Insurrection Committee need to be prosecuted, and past prez orange man stated in Florida this week if re-elected he will exonerate all those who participated in the insurrection.

This goes beyond words, it is insanity. The wrong individual died.
